Course goals:
 
1) To understand the terminology and fundamental physics behind the
properties of solids (particularly semiconductors).
 
2) To show how these properties influence the operation of solid
state devices.
 
3) To learn enough to pass the solid state section of the Materials
Department prelim. exam.

Course outline:
 
Crystal structure.
 
Crystal binding.
 
Electronic structure of metals; the free electron model.
 
Electronic structure of semiconductors; the nearly free electron
and tight-binding models.
 
Properties of intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors.
 
Basics of semiconductor devices; p-n junctions
 
Properties of insulators.
 
Phonons (dead week).

There is no perfect book for this class, so the lectures will be
supplemented with reading material. If you find an alternative
text which you prefer, it is fine for you to use that instead of
the suggested text.

Rules:
 
There will be a homework set assigned every Wednesday which
will be due at the beginning of discussion the following Wednesday.
You are encouraged to work together on solving the homework problems
but the final write up must be your own.
 
Homework which is one day late can earn a maximum of 90 %
of the total score, two days late 80 %, etc.  Homework turned in
after the discussion is considered 1 day late. Your lowest score won't
count towards your grade, or you can skip one homework completely if you are
sick/travelling/busy, etc.
 
The grade distribution is 30 % for the homework, 30 % for
the midterm (Monday Feb 12th in class) and 40 % for the
final (Wednesday March 21st, 8-11am). LET ME KNOW IMMEDIATELY IF
YOU HAVE CONFLICTS WITH THE EXAM TIMES.
 
You'll be allowed to bring in one single-sided
page of notes (8.5 x 11) into the mid-term. For the final you can
have notes on both sides.
