Cahn Thermax 400 TGA

Cahn Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA) The Cahn Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA) measures the weight loss of a sample as it is heated. The sample is loaded into a cup suspended from a micro balance and a furnace is then moved up to cover the sample cup. Gasses flow through the system to protect the microbalance and to control the sample chemistry.

Once the sample is heated it breaks down and loses mass. Changes in the sample mass are measured on a high resolution microbalance and recorded along with the temperature.

The Cahn TGA is intended to compliment the TGA capabilities of the MRL Chemistry Laboratory. The Cahn TGA has three advantages over the Mettler TGA; it can work at higher temperatures, it can work in more aggressive atmospheres, and it can accommodate bigger samples. It can be used with most gasses and can heat samples to 1500° C. The furnace heats quickly but is slow to cool. This limits the number of tests that can be done in one day.
