  3. Enter the username and password provided to you by the IT staff at MRL.

If you are new to the department, you can obtain a username/password from Jeffrey Barteet in room 2027, ext. 8642.

  4. The first time you login, you will encounter a brief and simple initial configuration screen. Once completed, proceed to the main screen of the MRL email application:

  5. Notice the upper lefthand corner options available to you: INBOX, Compose, Folders, Options, Search, Help, Address Book and Logout. Center your mouse cursor over any of the application options and click once on this option to proceed.

  6. "INBOX" will permit you to view any incoming email messages received by your account.

  7. "Compose" is the tool that permits you to compose new outgoing email messages. Once launched, Compose activates a sub-window:

You can create your email message within this window after providing the necessary address information for your recipient. It is also possible to send a copy of this email to another party by entering their email address(es) in the appropriate Cc or Bc column.

Another feature of the "Compose" function is the ability to include file attachments. Begin the file attachment process by clicking on the Attachments button found on the command bar near the middle of the screen in the Compose window.

The attachment process begins by adding a sub-window to the bottom of the Compose screen:

If you don't know where the file is on your local harddrive, hit the Browse button and find the file. Once you have located the file and it's path appears in the Attachment box, click on the Attach button to add this item to your email. You may repeat this process and add more than one file to any email.

BEWARE, there is a limit by the MRL server of a total of 50MB (megabytes) for any email outgoing message. If you attempt to attach a file or files in access of this limitation, the message will be rejected as an outgoing item by the server.

  8. The Search button permits you to search through your emails in a mailbox to find a specific text string.

  9. It is possible to create a personal address book. Start by selecting and hitting the Address book button. A window will be launched at this point to permit you to begin adding recipients to your Address book:

At the "Please choose an address book to add a contact to, you can either use the default address book name, "My Addressbook" or create a new name for your personal address book. Once finished with this routine, be sure to hit the "Add Contact" button to proceed. The next window will allow you to enter all pertinent information for new members of your Address Book:

When you finish adding information, be sure to hit the "Save" button as the final step to assure the recipient is added to your list.

  10. MRL maintains many mailing lists. These lists contain recipients who have been assigned to the list because they belong to a group that has special interests in a certain area. If you wish to utilize one of these mailing lists or need more information about them, please forward an email to either, Jeffrey Barteet, barteet@mrl.ucsb.edu or Linda Hall, lhall@mrl.ucsb.edu.
