Client Settings for MRL Email

To retrieve your mail, configure your client to use IMAP as the server type.

Set mail.mrl.ucsb.edu as the server name.

The IMAP server requires SSL and connects on port 993.

Your outgoing mail server settings are determined by your computer's location. If you're using a desktop computer On Campus, simply set mail.mrl.ucsb.edu as the outgoing SMTP server. The outgoing SMTP server does not require authentication and uses port 25.

If you are Off Campus, you have several options:

  • You can use your internet service provider's outgoing SMTP server
  • You can use the campus VPN (Virtual Private Network) and use the 'On Campus' settings as described above, or
  • You can configure your mail client to use the MRL's authenticated outgoing SMTP server.

To use your internet service provider's outgoing SMTP server, pleae refer to their help pages for settings. If you're using COX cable locally, their support pages start at http://support.cox.net.

To use the VPN, you must first download and install a client that will tunnel your network connection to the UCSB network. When active, the VPN makes your computer behave as if it is located on campus. Besides allowing you to access mail as described in the 'On Campus' section above, you can access science journals at the library, and use any campus network resource limited to the ucsb.edu domain.

To use the VPN client, you need a UCSB NetID. The VPN client will NOT work without a UCSB NetID. It should be UNDERSTOOD that while using the VPN client ALL of your internet traffic is routed through the UCSB campus network regardless of where you are or what internet resources you are requesting. In cases where you are not connecting to UCSB campus resources you can expect degraded performance compared to a non-VPN connection to the internet.

Download and follow the instructions for the VPN client at http://oit.ucsb.edu/network_services/VPN_service

For information regarding a UCSB NetID, see http://directory.ucbs.edu
The MRL does not issue UCSB NetIDs.

Your last option for outbound SMTP is to use the MRL authenticated outgoing mail server. In order to use the service, you must specify your outgoing mailserver to be the host outgoing.mrl.ucsb.edu. This server requires you to authenticate using your MRL login and password while using port 465 with SSL enabled. After configuring your mail client for this outgoing SMTP server, you should be able to send email through the MRL from any location where you are connected to the internet. This works with or without the VPN client.
