Materials Research Outreach Program at UCSB: Symposium 2004

Materials Research Outreach Symposium at UCSB
January 28-30, 2004
Alan J. Heeger, Symposium Host

We are proud to announce the Materials Research Outreach Program (MROP 2004) Symposium will be held January 28-30, 2004 at the UCSB Corwin Pavilion. As in past years, it will comprise two consecutive programs. The Macromolecular Outreach Program (MOP) Symposium, which will take place on Wednesday and Thursday morning, will focus on research efforts concerned with the science and engineering of organic-based macromolecules and polymers. The Inorganic Materials Program Symposium will be held on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. The overall program is designed to stimulate collaborative research between faculty groups at UCSB and industry scientists and engineers under the auspices of our Materials Research Laboratory, a Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers funded by the National Science Foundation. Several UC-industry joint research efforts have been initiated as a result of this Program. As befits the interdisciplinary nature of this effort, our participating faculty represent a number of departments (e.g. Materials, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, Mechanical and Environmental Engineering and Physics) and many have joint appointments in more than one department. Please review the preliminary list of participating UCSB faculty and their interests is included.

The scientific program will feature talks by UCSB faculty, students, and industry representatives, as well as posters sessions where the scope of materials research at UCSB can be appreciated through one-on-one contact with graduate students and faculty (See poster abstracts for MROP2004.) We will have a symposium banquet Wednesday evening after the first poster session. We urge you to take the opportunity to stay in Santa Barbara over the weekend, not just to save money on your airfare, but also to experience some of the many recreational possibilities and scenic attractions that Santa Barbara has to offer.

The DEADLINE FOR ROOM RESERVATIONS IS January 9, 2003. We have set aside a number of rooms at the Harbor View Inn, 28 W. Cabrillo Blvd. in downtown Santa Barbara for participants in the symposium. Please phone for reservations at (800) 755-0222 and ask for Sylvie in Group Sales as soon as possible to reserve a room at the special rate - space is limited. Tell them that you are with the "UCSB MROP 2004". In any case, please put these dates (January 28-30, 2004) on your calendar.

TRANSPORTATION WILL BE PROVIDED DAILY BETWEEN THE HARBOR VIEW INN AND UCSB. VANS WILL PICK UP GUESTS EACH MORNING AT 7:50 AM FOR SHUTTLE TO CAMPUS. PLEASE MEET IN FRONT OF THE LOBBY. PARKING ON CAMPUS IS SCARCE SO WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE VAN SERVICE.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: COMPLEX FLUIDS DESIGN CONSORTIUM MEETING

Preceding the MROP 2004 on Tuesday, January 27th, a meeting of the new Complex Fluids Design Consortium (CFDC) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) will be held in the Engineering II Pavilion. This new initiative will bring together UCSB faculty with researchers from industry and national laboratories interested in the computational design and processing behavior of soft materials and complex fluid formulations. More information on this program can be found at: http://www.mrl.ucsb.edu/cfdc/2004_Annual_Meeting/index.html . Inquiries should be directed to Sara Bard (sara@mc-cam.ucsb.edu or 805-893-7913).
