UCSB-LANL WORKSHOP ON MATERIALS AT UCSB As many of you are probably aware, UCSB has signed a cooperative agreement with Los Alamos National Laboratory under which LANL provides funding for a variety of collaborative activities, including research in materials science. Information about the agreement can be found at http://stb.lanl.gov/uc/collaboration_ucsb.html. The next deadline for submission of proposals for collaborative research will be in early July. To stimulate collaborative projects we are planning to hold a workshop at UCSB on June 2-3 that will be attended by a number of LANL scientists. The workshop will include short talks in a variety of areas including: spintronics and magnetism; soft matter; fuel cells and catalysis; and structural materials. There will also be an extensive poster session. The main goal of the workshop is to provide an opportunity for UCSB faculty and students to meet and interact with LANL scientists and postdocs and to identify areas of mutual interest. For this reason the focus will be more on providing opportunities for interaction rather than on maximizing the number of presentations. We will distribute before the meeting a short summary of the research interests of each of the participants in order to facilitate contacts. The workshop is being coordinated by a small committee with membership from both institutions [Richard LeSar and Roger Pynn (LANL); Tony Cheetham, Glenn Fredrickson, Ram Seshadri (UCSB)]. The Monday Sessions will be held in the Main Seminar Room of Kohn Hall at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. The Tuesday morning talks will take place in the Engineering II Pavilion, and the Tuesday afternoon talks will be held, again, at the Main Seminar Room, Kohn Hall. The Monday evening Poster Session and Banquet will be hosted at the UCSB Faculty Club (see bottom of page for link to campus map). VANS WILL PICK UP GUESTS EACH MORNING AT 8:15 AM FOR SHUTTLE TO CAMPUS. PLEASE MEET IN FRONT OF THE LOBBY. PARKING ON CAMPUS IS SCARCE AND EXPENSIVE SO WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE VAN SERVICE. POSTER SESSION A poster session will be held on Monday afternoon at the UCSB Faculty Club. Please let Roger Pynn know if you are planning to present a poster. Poster will be displayed on standard easels. Posters can be set-up in the Faculty Club interior courtyard beginning at 3:00 pm. AUDIO/VISUAL A laptop computer (PC) and projector will be provided as well as an overhead projetor.
