Structures.

Dr. Stucky received his Ph.D. in 1962 from Iowa
State University. After postdoctoral study at MIT, he held positions at
the University of Illinois, Sandia National Laboratory and DuPont Central
Research and Development Department before joining the UCSB faculty in
1985. Dr. Stucky has been active in the American Chemical Society,
serving as Associate Editor of the Journal of Inorganic Chemistry and as
Chairman of the Inorganic Division.
The overall research goal is the design, synthesis and
characterization of new materials with an emphasis on understanding
interface and nucleation chemistry. Molecular sieves, and mesoporous
(15 - 200 Å), electro-optic and biomaterials are being synthesized
and studied. Of particular interest are nucleation and crystal growth of
biphase nanocomposite materials using the cooperative assembly of
inorganic molecular building blocks with surfactants or biomolecules.
Some specific goals include O2/N2 separation and environmental
applications of porous materials, the use of inclusion chemistry to
control nonlinear optical properties, the self-assembly of molecular and
semiconductor arrays in porous crystalline hosts to form supramolecular
lattices, and the biogenetic synthesis of inorganic materials using
sequenced polypeptide substrates. |
