2002 Research Project: MEMS – Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems.

I worked in Prof. Turner’s MEMS Characterization Lab with Rajashree Baskaran. The purpose of the research I was involved in was to characterize a MEMS device “C2”, built by Rajashree Baskaran. The device we are testing is designed to vibrate when voltage is applied. Our tests are to determine what the highest velocity of vibrations will be for selected voltages What I learned from this project:
•Engineering is cool.
•Engineers solve problems for people.
•When you test something, you test all your variables millions of times against the control.
•Engineers write everything down in numbered log books.

2003 Curriculum Project: Overview of Teaching Motion using MEMS Accelerometers

I participated in a Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program sponsored by UC Santa Barbara and funded by the National Science Foundation. In the summer of 2002, I assisted Rajashree Baskaran (then a Mechanical Engineering graduate student of Dr. Kimberly Turner) test a MEMS device she designed. Next year I met with the other teachers of the RET group and we created lesson plans that would bring this research experience into the classroom. During the school year of 2003-2004, I will try out the MEMS lessons on my 8th grade students.
