Peony Dance Dazzles Audience at Benefit Banquet for SB Art Museum

The excitement barely subsided from the successful debut performance at the May 16 Chinese festival when it was stirred up again for members of the SBCAA Dance Troupe, with the invitation to perform at the opening exhibition of "Eternal China, Splendors from the First Dynasties" at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art(SBMA). To represent
SBCAA in such a grand occasion was a special honor for the dance troupe and members were all determined to give their best effort.

Under the direction of the troupe's choreographer Aidi Zhang, members started rehearsing the peony dance tirelessly every Friday evening in the field of a primary school. Every move was practiced repeatedly to achieve a level of elegance and perfection equal to the professional dancers. To highlight the dramatic atmosphere, Aidi designed a new
sequence in which dancers would enter the stage by dancing through the banquet tables accompanied by beautiful music. This sequence was rehearsed for more than fifty times and the music was carefully chosen and recorded. At the dress rehearsal the day before the performance, it was discovered that the stage was much smaller than expected and
was elevated one meter above the ground. Also the stage was made of polishe hardwood and there was no curtains or guard rails. Obviously it was already too late to change choreography. Instead, dancers practiced with much tighter formations to accommodate the smaller stage, paying close attention to prevent collisions and accidents. To solve the
problem of the slippery floor, dancers taped the heels of the their shoes. It was almost like dancing on the ice.

From the very beginning, the Curator of Asian Art of SBMA Susan Tai gave the dancers her full support. She carefully arranged the stage light and sound system to provide the best effects for the dance and assigned a special person to prompt the dancers. She made sure that the grassy path leading to the stage was level and made available a special room for dancers to change costume and put on make up. She even requested that the waiting staff minimize walking around during the performance. Such attention to detail and thorough planning made us feel very assured.

On the evening of July 17, the Santa Barbara Court House was elegantly an ceremoniously decorated for the grand event. Lit by bright lights, the big poster for the "Eternal China, Splendors of the first Dynasties" exhibition was particularly eye-catching against the backdrop of the magnificent arched entrance. Red carpet was laid on the path from the museum parking lot to the sunken garden lawn of the court house. Uniformed waiting staff, including some dancers from our troupe in traditional Chinese dresses, greeted luminaries and celebrities attending the event. More than fifty tables lit by gas lanterns were set up on the lawn. On each table a bouquet of yellow roses dispersed their sweet fragrance into the night air.

At approximately 9:30, the banquet was near its end. It was time for the dancers to enter. On stage under the intense spotlight, the gentle music Singing to the Night on a Boat was being played on the ancient Chinese musical instrument. There were no loud noises at the tables. The atmosphere was quite and relaxed. But, our hearts were pumping heavily. With a round of applause, the Director of SBMA gave a speech. He introduced Susan Tai, Curator of Asian Art, and praised her outstanding work, he acknowledged SBCAA's contribution, and talked about the peony as the symbol of beauty in the Chinese culture.... with applause and beautiful music, the eight peony dancers appeared on the steps opposite the stage. Camera lights flashed from all around us, and all eyes are on the beautiful dancers dressed in colorful traditional Qipao and elegantly decorated with flowers on their heads. The dancers maintained their composure throughout the introduction and delivered a superb performance on the stage. The beauty of the dance and the dancers completely captivated the audience. Almost every move was greeted with enthusiastic applause and whistle. At the end of the dance, Susan Tai joined us on stage to congratulate us on our success.

Undoubtedly, the beauty of the peony dance made a lasting impression on the audience, much to the satisfaction and hope of the dancers.

The eight peony dancers are: Xiangyang Fang, Yejin He, Jian Han, Hanxiang Li, Wei Li, Xiaohong Yang, Guilan Zhang, and Lily Zhang. (written by Guilan Zhang)

It is fairly recent that I come to know Mr. & Mrs. Teng who own the San Roque Motel. Although they have been in Santa Barbara for only 3 years, their business has grown to two motels. Their uncles, who helped them initially, now also run their own motels. On State Street alone, they build a connection of 4 motels. The speed of expansion has been very dramatic.

Nicolas gives me the impression of bright, warm person full of spirit. He has a top-notch business sense and dare to carry out plans with determination. He was born in Taiwan, however he went by himself to meet with his parent in France when he was only thirteen. His boldness maybe seen by the fact that he adventured throughout the Europe by hiking and biking in his

youth. He later came to America for study and obtained both a BSEE and a MBA from USC. In 1992, he married Helen who was a Computer Science Major. Even while he was

a student in USC, he took care of apartments and motels owned by his uncles. That experience helped him to build a solid foundation for his current business in Santa Barbara. They seized the opportunity with insight brought by their experience and knowledge. They manage the motels with their skills and hard works themselves and at the same time treat their workers well. As a result, their business has been growing ever since.

They have two sons, Benjamin and Steven. They insist upon talking to them in Mandarin. They take time to go traveling with the whole family two month every year even with their busy schedule. He is a regular in hiking sponsored by us. He also supports us by running ads in our newsletter, not so much for his business but out of his care for this association. May their business grow even stronger. (By Ami Li)

SBCAA Continues to Develop Web Site

The internet domain name "chinesefestival.com" was recently registered and donated to the SBCAA by Dr. James Sturgeon.

"Really good and easy to remember names are disappearing fast, and I thought we should reserve this one quickly because it will help to advertise our festival and events more widely in the years to come', Sturgeon said.

The name has been registered with the InterNIC, the national regulatory agency for internet website addresses. It is hoped that the new website with that name can be functioning by the first of next year. Currently, members who maintain our website are working hard to get the website ported to the new address, and to continue enhance its contents.

The "chinesefestival.com" website will be used to inform members about upcoming events, but also can be linked to other websites around the country to advertise the Annual Chinese Festival at Oak Park.

"I was inspired by the San Jose Chinese Historical Project's Website. People from around the world can access it and see pictures of their Chinese Festival and learn about their upcoming activities. They also have interesting articles on local exhibits of Chinese art and culture. It would be nice if we could build up a resource like that", Sturgeon added.

Jeff and Susan are two devoted contributors to SBCAA. They are the proud owners of Speedy Graphic and Printing franchise in Goleta for years. When SBCAA was first established, Ms. Barbara Luan, wife of renowned cardiologist Dr. Lawrence Luan, donated the copying service to our 6 issues per year newsletter distribution. Many thanks to you, Barbara. About two years ago, Jeff and Susan have taken over the job and donated their tine and services to us free of charge quietly. Since SBCAA 's financial strength has been improved over the years, we could afford to compensate their service, but they insist that Speedy only be compensated at the minimal cost for the copying service. It is a great saving for the Association.

Both Jeff and Susan are graduates of Su-Zhou University in Taipei, Taiwan. Jeff majored in Economics, Susan in Law study. In 1979, the sophomores met and fell in love in the swimming pool of China Motion Pictures Studio outside Taipei. Since then the campus couple have enjoyed those romantic golden undergraduate days by swimming, hiking, camping ,or studying in the library together.

Susan came to the States in 1980 and worked on her MBA degree in UC Riverside while Jeff remained behind to fill out his mandatory military duty. The painful two years of mail correspondence finally finished when Jeff joined Susan and started his master in Computer Science study. They have been happily married since the 15th of August 1982. Susan worked for a trading company in Torrance and later they moved to Santa Barbara. They both worked for the same sporting goods trading company  in Goleta after Jeff had his master degree.
With entrepreneurial spirit, they both quit their high salaried jobs and bought the national chain, Speedy Graphic and Printing franchise in Goleta in 1990. Being their own boss, they worked hard but smart to establish a profitable business. They had more time to relax and more control of future financial independence.

Ðí¼ÒÈ«¼Ò¸£ (The Hsus )

In 1993, Susan gave birth to a lovely boy, and thus the Hsus happiness in further enhanced. They are together day and night working as business partners, also as a Mom and Pop team. Susan can take care of Jeff, the baby, and the business at the same time. A wonderful arrangement for a modern woman.

Their Speedy Graphic and Printing shop is located in the Fairview Shopping Center, adjacent to the home improvement giant retailer, OSH. The shop has high traffic visibility and convenient parking.

The scope of business includes: High Speed Black & White and color copying, Printing and Graphic design of business cards, invitation cards and pamphlets, brochures, posters in either two colors or multi- colors. Typesetting and proof-reading are provided. They whole operation is run by computer system with up-to- date state of the art equipment. On the side, the store also provides office stationery, papers and FAX service.

They realize the importance of retail business for future growth. I highly recommend you to check them out and become a customer. Members of SBCAA will enjoy price discounts in addition to quality products and friendly good service. Jou Ming (Lillian) Wueste
