our research is focused on the crystal chemistry and crystal-structure — property relations in functional inorganic materials, both bulk and nano. In addition to our traditional focus on magnetism, polar materials, and porosity, we find ourselves increasingly contributing to materials for heterogeneous catalysis and for applications in solid state lighting (semiconductors, phosphors ...) We also extensively research functional (particularly oxide) nanomaterials. support for our work comes from the National Science Foundation's Division of Materials Research (Career and the UCSB MRSEC), as well as from the Department of Energy. In addition, we are supported by the American Chemical Society's Petroleum Research Fund, the UC Discovery Program, and UCSB's Solid State Lighting and Energy Center.
