Cooperative International Science and Engineering Internships:
The Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) seeks undergraduate science and engineering majors who are interested in pursuing a research experience overseas. This internship program sends science and engineering undergraduates from U C campuses to international partner institutions for a 10-week summer research experience. Internships are available at research centers in Dublin-Ireland; Eindhoven-Netherlands; Okinawa-Japan; and Gothenborg-Sweden. Interns will gain first-hand experience in scientific investigation in a dynamic, collaborative research environment and enjoy the overall experience of being abroad. Participating students will be matched individually with designated mentors, working in collaboration throughout the program. We encourage applications from students interested in interdisciplinary materials science, with backgrounds in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Materials or Physics. Preference will be given to applicants with prior research experience, including UCSB internship programs.
Student Eligibility: This program is open to any science or engineering undergraduate student who meets the following requirements:
- Will be enrolled as a third or fourth year in Fall 2026
- Is a US citizen or permanent resident
- Has a passport valid through September 2026 or an expedited passport application submitted at the time of application
- Is an enrolled undergraduate at a University of California campus
Internship Awards:
- The Summer CISEI program will run from June 15 to August 23, 2026.
- Internship dates may differ depending on location of institution.
- Housing, travel and living expenses are provided!
