The Future Leaders in Advanced Materials program (FLAM) Program is sponsored by the Materials Research Laboratory and the UCSB College of Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Science and engineering students from UCSB and universities across the country acquire research experience in a variety of exciting fields through the internship. Interns meet regularly to share their experiences and report on their progress. Our research interns often present at conferences such as SACNAS, SHPE, ACS, APS and others. |
Eligibility:
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Undergraduate student enrolled for Fall 2027
Summer FLAM Research Program
The Summer FLAM Program provides a 9-week intensive research experience for students interested in a career in science, engineering, technology or mathematics. Interns will gain first-hand experience in scientific investigation in a dynamic, collaborative research environment. They will be matched individually with UCSB faculty and graduate student lab mentors who will provide training and support. In addition to research, the interns will also participate in weekly group meetings to develop oral presentation skills, attend special seminars and present their results at an end-of-summer poster session.
Internship Awards:

The Summer FLAM program will run from June 14 - August 13, 2027.

The stipend for undergraduate interns is $6,000 total for 9 weeks at 35 hours/week.

Awards will be concentrated in, but not limited to, the MRL, the College of Engineering, and Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Shared housing is provided in the UCSB student apartments (for non-UCSB students).

Travel costs up to $700 will be provided for travel to and from the UCSB (for non-UCSB students).
**UCSB students applying to the program will need to identify a faculty mentor and research project before applying to the program.**
